Off Again, this time to East Sound of Orcas Island!

The San Juan Islands archipelago, which are composed of 172 islands (not all are inhabited, some are just rock formations) have three main islands:  San Juan Island, Orcas Island and Lopez Island.  The Washington State Ferry system has routes that connects these three islands as well as Shaw Island, which is in the middle of the other three, and also runs to Anacortes on mainland Washington.

When I first came here July 2010, I had NO idea the Puget Sound was so huge!  As we motored from Seattle to Lopez Island, I thought we were on the Pacific Ocean, but that is approximately 95 miles from the southern tip of Lopez, between the Olympic mountain range, down the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Here's a map to give you an idea of its vastness.  You can click on the image to enlarge.

SO!  Look for Fisherman's Bay, then trace your finger around the north end of Lopez through Upright Channel,  curving around between Shaw and Orcas and into the West Sound.  That's the route we took on Saturday.

Sunday we came out of the West Sound, went past the ferry dock on Orcas and then went up into the East Sound, going up about halfway to Rosario Resort.  Total nautical miles:  9.590nm.

Coming back from Rosario, we again came back thru Upright Channel to Fisherman's Bay.   Nautical miles for that return trip:  9.931nm.

Total nautical mileage for our "adventure:" 29.752nm!

Anyway, after a wonderful breakfast back at Kingfisher Inn and rowing back to the boat, Paul had a moment of silliness...

Ok, WHAT was in the coffee???

Practicing my rowing, but I STILL can't go backwards without going around in circles!

Testing to see if the wild blackberries are ready!
Nope, not ready yet, still sour!

Cute little cat boat that we passed on our row back to the boat.  I dub ye "Kon Tiki."

Paul being patriotic and hoisting our American flag, bot
we still shopping fo' one smaller Hawaiian flag, brah.

We hoisted both sails...
Brand-new sails, a beautiful sight to see!
We were CRUISING!  In nice, cool 15 mph winds, we were doing 6.2 knots to weather and were heeling-over nicely...I had to be railmeat for a bit!

And the gennaker too!

A patriotic portrait, don't you think?

And then I got obsessed with my Sperry Topsiders...

CUTE, no?

The wind got light as we sailed downwind to Rosario Resort, so we popped the gennaker and then later tried the spinnaker.

Rosario Resort and Spa.  I posted pics of this beautiful place back in July.

 Uh......ok.

This masthead was carved out of a solid trunk of white pine and was from the clipper ship "America," built in 1874 in Quincy, MA.  Unfortunately, she was wrecked on San Juan Island in 1914, but before then she sailed from NY to SF in 89 days, and from SF to Liverpool in 102 days, and at the time this figurehead was one of the most beautiful around.

As a carpenter, its no wonder Paul got so excited over her, but she doesn't look impressed...

Trimming Out anchored under the bluff in really deep water!  We were less than 20 yards from the shore and the water was over 60 ft. deep.

Ok, I found another dream house, with lavender bushes!
But the bees were attacking me!

After a little snack of potato chips, soda and a beer for Paul, we rowed back to the boat for our motor back to Fisherman's Bay.

We were greeted by a little gray-spotted seal who followed us for a bit, but as soon as I got my camera out, he disappeared.
:o\
I named him "Harold," for "Harold the harbor seal."

Yet ANOTHER beautiful sunset from Fisherman's Bay, as we were tidying up and securing the boat on anchor.
On our way home from the grocery store, we saw the "flying hospital" helicopter at the health center, picking up a patient to transport to mainland Washington.

Jerry in the man-cave, enjoying a freshly BBQ'd t-bone, baked potato, veggies in a frying pan (he didn't have enough hands to hold it up) and enjoying his growler of Boundary Bay IPA brew that we picked up for his birthday, feeling NO pain!

After our sailing weekend and Jerry with his "growler," we ALL slept good that night!
:o)
